Guignol - French theme Puppet Shows
Our
cross cultural show The Franglais
links the traditional British Punch and Judy with the French tradition
of Guignol - performed in english with short bursts of french it is
ideal for french markets and french themed events.Guignol was first created in the early 1800's in France by an unemployed silk weaver from Lyon, when performed in french Guignol still retains typical lyonnaise words and accents and he is as familiar a figure across France as Mr Punch is in Britain due to the popularity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries of travelling Guignol shows.
Guignol always wears a brown coat, and black cap with a long pigtail peeking out, typical of lyonnais silk weavers of the period. He has a mischievous look and a rebellious spirit evident in the shows which began by satirising local politics and the authorities but like Punch & Judy have in recent years become entertainment primarily for children.
Other characters in the Guignol show include Guignols wife - Madelon who is often very grumpy and overbearing, Gnafron the local drunk and the long suffering gendarme Flageolet.

Walkabout Body Booth
Alongside our formal puppet shows we
can offer a more informal walkabout themed either to Punch and Judy or to
Guignol. The mobile body booth enables the puppeteer to mingle with the
public creating small sketches and live encounters as he wanders around
an event.
The body booth is interactive and lots of fun as the puppeteer becomes a character in his own show. Pictured is the Punch theme body booth with the puppeteer playing the part of the policeman along with Mr Punch and a very snappy crocodile.
